The Details

You'll see the latter above the fireplace, titled 'Man in the Bedchamber'.

Did You Know?

Sir Thomas Herbert (1606-1682) was a traveller, historian and 'gentleman of the bedchamber' of King Charles I while he was in custody of Parliament until his execution. It's believed that King Charles wrote to Sir Thomas asking for a warm shirt so he wouldn't be cold on the scaffold. Prior to his appointment in that regard, he was the ambassador for Persia. Sir Thomas was born at Herbert House, now a Grade I listed building in York.
